Colombia Men's Football Team Qualifies For Olympics
The Colombian men's football team became the final team to qualify for the Summer Olympics in Rio di Janeiro, after beating the United States. The Colombian team will compete for gold medals against Japan, Fiji, Argentina, Algeria, Iraq, Portugal, Denmark, Mexico, South Korea, Sweden, Honduras, Brazil, Nigeria and Portugal.
Premier League Teams Come Out Against Doping Claims
The Sunday Times has made claims that many professional athletes are using performance-enhancing drugs, or doping, including several Premier League players. Arsenal, Chelsea and Leicester City have all spoken out in statements dismissing these allegations.
Qualifying Matches Continue For African Cup
Qualifying matches continue for the 2017 African Cup of Nations Tournament. On Tuesday, Nigeria suffered a bitter disappointment, losing a critical qualifying match 1-0 against Egypt. Nigeria previously won the Cup in 2013 but won't qualify for the upcoming tournament. Egypt moves forward to a second round qualifying match with Tanzania in June. Morocco meanwhile became the first team to qualify for the African Cup by beating Cape Verde in a 2-0 victory.
China, Australia, Japan Advance in Asian World Cup Qualifying
Australia, Japan and now China have all advanced in their bid to qualify for World Cup qualification. On March 29th, the Chinese team enjoyed a 2-0 victory against Qatar. Australia previously beat Jordan 5-1 and Japan prevailed 5-0 against Syria. Syria nevertheless succeeded in advancing into the next round of matches as a best runner up.
2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifying Continues
A significant number of games occurred during the final week of March as teams in the Western Hemisphere sought to qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. On March 24th, Argentina narrowly beat Chile 2-1 and Ecuador and Paraguay drew even scores. Uruguay obtained a surprising 2-2 draw during a match in Recife.
MLS League Player of the Month
In the United States, Major League Soccer fans voted to award the designation of Player of the Month to Joao Plata, a forward with Real Salt Lake. Mr. Plata, from Ecuador, played professionally in Canada before joining Real Salt Lake early in 2013. He previously won the George Gross Memorial Trophy awarded to the player deemed most valuable in the Canadian Soccer Championship in 2011.
England Prevails in Exhibition Match
In a hotly contested friendly match with Germany, England's football team prevailed 3-2. The results of the exciting game attracted favourable attention from many media observers. Eric Dier scored the third winning goal for the English team during a surprising comeback on the field that tipped the results from a 2-0 German lead to a last minute English victory.
